South-Doyle High School History
South-Doyle High School has a unique history. In 1968, a new complex of school buildings located on 75 acres of East Tennessee farmland in South Knox County opened its doors to Doyle High School, and Doyle Middle School to students in 1973. The two schools were separated by a public road that divided the two institutions into separate campuses with classroom facilities totaling approximately 650-thousand square feet.
This arrangement continued until 1991, when, by order of the Knox County School Board and the Office of Civil Rights, Doyle High School merged with South-Young High School to become South-Doyle High School. The former middle school campus became incorporated into South-Doyle High School and is recognized as the Young Campus. South-Young High School had its own proud history as it was established in 1976 with the merging of Young High School and South High School. Young High was established in 1913 and South High was established in 1952. With the creation of South-Doyle and the Young Campus, all three schools were represented by their heritage and the contributions their respective students made to this area. Many of South-Doyle's students have parents and grandparents that attended one of the three South Knoxville schools. The history of South Knoxville's high schools is as rich as the history of the community itself.
